Boulder Opal and Sterling Silver Earrings

This solid Boulder Opal split* makes for a beautiful pair of earrings.  The Boulder Opal shows sparkles of pink, red, blue and green along with a deep yellow potch** all sitting on dark brown ironstone.  The hand sawn out design on the back of the earrings not only displays a bit of colour, but also shows that these stones are solid Boulder Opal.  The earrings are made with a fine silver*** bezel around the stones and a sterling silver backplate, rings and ear wires.

Size

The stones are 19 x 10 mm.  Overall length of the earrings, including the earwires, is 38 mm (1.5″).

*A Boulder Opal split is when an opal vein in the stone has been split into 2 pieces by the opal cutter producing 2 matching, or closely matching, stones that can be used in jewellery pieces like earrings.

**Potch, also known as common opal, is opal that does not display colour. Potch can be white to yellow to grey in colour. Opal which does display colour is known as precious opal.

***Fine Silver is 99.9% pure silver. As a comparison, Sterling Silver is 92.5% pure silver. Fine Silver is softer and more pliable than Sterling Silver so it can be shaped more easily around a stone to form a bezel. Fine Silver is also highly resistant to tarnish.
