We welcome you to share our love of boulder opal.  Flame Tree Opals was born out of a love for rocks.  We discovered our passion for opal back in 2014, while on a camping holiday in central west Queensland.  We happened across the beautiful outback area of Opalton, 120 kms south of the town of Winton.  Sheldon has always been a rock hound, and his enthusiasm for fossicking rubbed off on me (Sandy).  We spent time in Opalton noodling for the boulder opal it’s famous for, and fell in love with opal and the area. 

Not long after arriving back home to north Brisbane after that trip, Sheldon found an ad for an opal mine for sale in Opalton.  That was all it took to convince ourselves to give opal mining a go and we jumped in head first.  We were looking for a new adventure and we found it!  We have never looked back.  We love the outback area around Opalton, mining for boulder opal, cutting our opal, and designing and making jewellery from the treasures that come from our opal mine.  We eventually moved to Winton and its charismatic opal mining community to be closer to our mine.

We have been in the opal business since 2014 and now are pleased to share our opals and jewellery with you in our online store.  All of the boulder opal on our site is ethically sourced from our mine and cut by us.  The jewellery is entirely designed by Sandy and either made by Sandy or under careful instruction from Sandy.  We hope you love our beautiful boulder opal as much as we do.
