Care of Opal Jewellery
Boulder Opal stones
Solid and natural opal will not be affected by water, oils or creams. However, a build up of these products can reduce its shine and brightness. Store your opal jewellery separate from other pieces to protect against scratches. Abrasives, scrapes and hard knocks can damage your opal. You can gently clean your opal with warm, soapy water and gently clean around the setting with a soft toothbrush. Be sure to dry your opal well and then rub your piece with the jewellers cloth to make it shine.
Copper
All of the copper pieces you see on our website have had a patina put on them. Next they are sealed with a special wax coating and then buffed. If you want to be sure to keep your copper patina while still cleaning the jewelry, the process is easy. You can wipe down your copper jewelry with a microfiber cloth and soapy, warm water. Just gently cleaning your copper jewelry will remove any dirt, dust, and films on the surface, but it won’t remove the patina itself. You may notice that your copper jewellery may take on a slightly darker colour over time from wearing it against your skin. Copper with a wax, or other type, of seal, can be worn away by the friction of the jewellery against your skin. Be sure to remove your copper jewellery after wearing, wipe it over with your jewellers cloth and store in an air tight container or zip lock baggie (see ‘Oxidation’ below).
Silver
To preserve the polish of your sterling silver jewellery, avoid exposure to household cleaning products, bleach and other strong chemicals. You can polish tarnished sterling silver with specially made jewellery polishing cloths. It is a good idea to use a polishing cloth before and after you wear your jewellery to keep your silver sparkling. Keeping your silver jewellery in an airtight container (see ‘Oxidation’ below) will also help prevent tarnish on your sterling silver.
Oxidation
All jewellery is at risk of oxidation, even with a seal on it, be it a wax or an anti tarnish coating (frequently used on sterling silver). The best way to protect your jewellery from oxidation is to keep it in an airtight container or a plastic ziplock baggie to keep the air from getting to it. Adding anti tarnish tabs to the container/baggie will also help. Also try to keep your jewellery away from humidity, as in don’t store it in a humid place, like the bathroom. Store your jewellery in a cool, dry place and in separate containers/baggies to keep it from getting scratched by other pieces.
